WOLF HUGO (1860-1903)
L.A.S. "Wölfing", Vienna, March 11, 1897, to his dear Enrico[Heinrich POTPESCHNIGG]; 2 pages and a half in-8; in German. Nice letter with two musical quotes about his opera Der Corregidor. [Potpeschnigg had produced at his own expense an edition of the Corregidor, to which Wolf wants to make corrections.] On Saturday, for his birthday, he will gather a small company, including the spiritual writer Michael Haberlandt, one of his newest and most fervent supporters, to whom he will recite his Corregidor. He agreed that in the prelude to Act 3, the bassoons had been allowed to go all the way. The day before, he added a change in the beginning, which will be very easy to add: in the 13th bar of the new arrangement, where the four horns play loud, the bassoons and cellos must bring the motif of the Corregidor ("In punkto Vorspiel des 3. Aktes hast Du wohl daran gethan, die Fagotte bis zum letzten c in der angegebenen Weise mitgehn zu lassen. Ich habe es nicht anders gemeint. Hingegen habe ich gestern noch eine Änderung im Vorspiel angebracht, die sehr leicht nachzutragen ist. Im 13: Takt von der neuen Bearbeitung ab, wo die 4 Hörner auf f einsetzen, sollen die Fagotte nebst den Violoncellen das Corregidormotiv bringen"); and Wolf notes for each instrument the two musical measures, which must be modified in both scores. He waits for the arrival of the new songs to send everything to Enrico at the same time, and is delighted that he likes the Amphitryon. The fact that you love the Amphitryon so much makes me very happy. The motivation of the Donjuanesque desires of the former divine sinner is of course a little delicate for them, the modern ones ("Ich warte noch immer auf das Eintreffen der neuen Lieder, um Dir dann Alles auf einmal zukommen zu lassen. Daß Dir der Amphytrion so gut gefällt, freut mich höchlichst. Die Motivirung der donjuanlichen Gelüste des alten göttlichen Sünders ist freilich für uns Moderne eine etwas mißliche Sache")... He wi
